Bank Of America Credit Reports
Hunger in America 2010, the largest study of domestic hunger ever conducted, provides comprehensive data about emergency food distribution and the people served by Feeding America. Feeding America (formerly named America's Second Harvest) is the largest network of emergency food providers in the United States. Increasing the awareness about hunger is one of the goals of the organization, as well as connecting clients seeking emergency food assistance with federal benefits, and advocating support of low-income Americans. Hunger in America 2010 is its fifth extensive study of hunger. The detailed study draws data from more than 61,000 client interviews and surveys of 37,000 feeding agencies.
1 in 8 Americans Struggle with Hunger
Contrary to common perceptions hunger is not confined to small pockets of society. Food banks serve a broad cross-section of households. Many people who use the services of a pantry are in poor health, have lost their jobs and struggle to pay medical bills. Many have young children. Feeding America features over 50 stories of clients in every region of the country who would not know what to do without their local food banks.
Robert, a 75-year-old Vietnam veteran, lost his home, when he had to have heart surgery at the VA hospital in New Haven (CT). With a social security check as the only source of income, he is living out of a van which he parks each night at local truck stops. Robert relies on meals he receives from the Community Kitchen. In return he spends many hours helping out with the clean up after meals in the kitchen, washing over 300 plates on their busiest days.
David and Ethel in Anchorage (AL) had to turn to the Kinsey House shelter run by the Salvation army, after they fell behind paying bills and rent. The couple has 7 children between them and twins on the way. David lost his job in 2008 and hasn't been able to find work since. The family is trying to save money and hopes to move into a transitional home for homeless families.
