The Katikati area was settled by pioneers from Ulster, Ireland, in the late nineteenth century. Situated in the Bay of Plenty which has fertile soils and a mild climate, it became a prosperous dairy farming and fruit growing district. But in the 1990's, the township of Katikati re-invented itself - as a centre of open-air art and poetry.

Now known as Mural Town, Katikati attracts many visitors who wander the small township, taking in all the sculptures, artworks, and murals that adorn the sides of many of the town's buildings.

The Murals of Katikati

There are 44 open-air works of art at Katikati, many of which are murals. These wall paintings portray the founding of the township, important people who lived in the area, events from the past and scenes of Katikati. There is even a three-dimensional mural of colourful, modern children's toys.
